Jordan Pass Tips 2026 – 12 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Pass

You’ve bought your Jordan Pass – now how do you get the absolute most out of it? These Jordan Pass tips cover smart planning strategies, money-saving hacks, and practical on-the-ground advice for your 2026 Jordan trip.

Tip 1 – Buy Early, Not Last Minute

The Jordan Pass must be purchased before you arrive in Jordan. While it’s technically instant (delivered by email), don’t leave it to the night before you fly. Buy it at least a week ahead so you have time to:

  • Correct any errors in your application
  • Download and save it offline
  • Print a backup copy

Full purchase instructions at our how to buy the Jordan Pass guide.

Tip 2 – Choose the Right Package

Pick your Petra days honestly:

  • 1 day (Wanderer, ~$70): Only if you have very limited time. Feasible with a 6 AM start, but you’ll feel rushed.
  • 2 days (Explorer, ~$80): The sweet spot for most travelers. The extra $10 gets you a full second day – excellent value.
  • 3 days (Insider, ~$99): If Petra is your main reason for visiting Jordan, this is worth it.

The cost difference between Wanderer and Explorer is minimal. When in doubt, choose Explorer.

Tip 3 – Start Petra at 6 AM

Petra’s gates open at 6 AM, and the first 2-3 hours are magical: the Siq is cool, the Treasury glows in early morning light, and you’ll often have it nearly to yourself. By 9-10 AM, tour groups arrive in force. Early risers get the best photographs and the most peaceful experience.

Stay in Wadi Musa town (right next to Petra) the night before your visit.

Tip 4 – Save Your Pass on Your Phone Offline

Download your Jordan Pass PDF to your phone and save it to your photos or a PDF reader that works offline. Internet connectivity at some borders, entrance gates, and remote sites can be unreliable. Having the QR code offline ensures you can always present it.

Carry a printed backup in your day bag alongside your passport.

Tip 5 – Plan Your 2-Week Window

Once activated at the border, your pass is valid for attractions for 2 weeks. If you’re doing a multi-country trip (Jordan + Israel + Egypt, for example), make sure you’re entering Jordan far enough from your planned departure to use all the sites you want. Plan your Jordan Pass validity window around your main attraction days.

Tip 6 – The Northern Jordan Day Trip

Many travelers focus entirely on the south (Petra, Wadi Rum) and miss excellent northern sites that are all included in the Jordan Pass:

  • Jerash – 45 mins from Amman, 2-3 hours to explore
  • Ajloun Castle – 30 mins from Jerash, 1-2 hours to explore
  • Umm Qais – northern tip of Jordan, stunning views, 1-2 hours

Combining Jerash + Ajloun as an Amman day trip is one of the best Jordan Pass value moves. Read more on our Jordan Pass Jerash page.

Tip 7 – Combine with the Dead Sea Strategically

The Dead Sea float (and the Baptism Site nearby) are on the way between Amman and Petra if you take the scenic route via the Jordan Valley. The Baptism Site is included in the Jordan Pass. Dead Sea resort beaches charge separately, but the public beach access areas are generally free.

Tip 8 – Respect the 3-Night Minimum

This is the rule most travelers miss. If you stay fewer than 3 nights in Jordan, the visa fee (~$56) will be charged at your exit border. Keep your hotel receipts to prove your nights. Three nights is very easy to achieve on any meaningful Jordan trip. Details in our Jordan Pass requirements guide.

Tip 9 – Get Jordanian Dinars from Amman ATMs

Jordan uses the Jordanian Dinar (JOD, pegged to USD at ~1.41). While major hotels and some restaurants in tourist areas accept cards, many entrance kiosks, restaurants, and local markets are cash-only. Get JOD from ATMs in Amman before heading south – ATMs are abundant in the capital but limited in Wadi Musa and Wadi Rum.

Tip 10 – Book Accommodation Early for Petra

Wadi Musa (the town for Petra) has accommodation at every price point, but popular guesthouses and boutique hotels fill up quickly in peak season (March-May, September-October). Book at least 1-2 months ahead if traveling during these months.

Tip 11 – The King’s Highway Route

Instead of taking the fast Desert Highway from Amman to Petra, take the slower but stunning King’s Highway. It passes through Madaba (Jordan Pass – mosaic map), the Crusader castle of Kerak (Jordan Pass), and the spectacular Wadi Mujib canyon. Budget a full day for this route but it’s unforgettable and maximizes Jordan Pass value.

See our Jordan Pass included attractions page for everything along this route.

Tip 12 – Dress Appropriately

Jordan is a conservative Muslim-majority country. While tourist areas are relaxed:

  • Cover shoulders and knees in religious sites (Baptism Site, churches, mosques)
  • Swimwear is fine at Dead Sea resorts and in Aqaba
  • In cities and markets, modest dress earns respect and reduces unwanted attention
  • A lightweight scarf is a versatile travel essential for all genders

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best order to visit Jordan Pass attractions?

A logical sequence: Amman (base) → Day trip to Jerash + Ajloun → Madaba + Dead Sea + Baptism Site → Kerak Castle → Petra (2-3 days) → Wadi Rum (1-2 nights) → Aqaba. This follows a south-flowing route from Amman and avoids backtracking.

Can I visit the same attraction twice with the Jordan Pass?

Generally no – each site can be visited once per pass. Petra is the exception, where multiple consecutive days are counted separately based on your package.

Is tipping expected in Jordan?

Tips are appreciated but not strictly mandatory. Restaurant tips of 10% are standard. Drivers, guides, and hotel staff appreciate tips. At Jordan Pass sites, the pass covers entry but a small tip for helpful staff is always kind.
